We are heading back home this morning. The sky is grey, light
rain, but no wind.
Driving out of Victoria is easy.
We stop in Chemainus to tour the little town's murals.
The town of Chemainus was a logging town, but when the logging industry
slowed down in the 1980's, it almost died. The residents of
Chemainus rallied and decided to fight back and turned toward tourism
to survive. They contracted many world famous and local painters
to
paint mural telling the story of the town. They have more than 40
murals now.
A stroke of luck, a tour is just about to start as we get in
town. We join in, here is our guide.
When you look at this mural, you can see a point between the native
girl and the boat. Now if you look above the minivan, you can see
the same point.
The statues are made of "papier mâcher" and covered with a lacker to
seal them. They are made to last a long time.
This mural is to commemorate the presence of Chines immigrants in the
early
years of the town.
Two photos of the same mural, but they look different. One
is representing spring and the other represent fall.
Before heading back on the road, we have lunch in a cute little bistro.
The trip back home was pretty good.
Sunday June 17, 2012
We do some shopping today because we are going to Jérémy and Danielle's
place for a cheese fondue.
On our way back from the grocery store, we saw a doe and her little
fawn
cross the road. We had to take photos.
Gabriel in his little activity center.
Our meal was great and we forgot to take any photos. Darn!
Monday June 18, 2012
Jérémy is taking us for a hike where he goes climbing with Danielle and
Shann.
Gabriel loves his activity center.
Right at the start of the hike, we have to climb a very steep hill, no
time to warm
up!
One of the climbs they do. You can see some of the hook point on
the rock face.
Jérémy showing me a book explaining each climb.
To get to "Devil's ladder" we have to go up some very steep
areas. A rope sure helps!
Here we are 30 meters up and not even at the top of the climb. To
see the view from the water,
click
here.
Pretty neat how this tree grew on the side of this rock.
One of the beach as we head back to the car.
After working out so hard, an ice cream as a treat.
Kind of hard to see, but they sunk ships at the break water and at low
tide you can sometimes see some starfish.
Jérémy has flowed his FPV airplane over the shipwrecks, to see the
video,
We spend the afternoon reading by the fire.
Tuesday June 19, 2012
Jérémy came for a short visit this morning.
The sky is clear of clouds in the afternoon, so me and Michèle are
going
to kayak on Comox lake.
The first place we head for is the small stream coming to the lake.
The same one I did with Jérémy.
Some photos from the water.
It is not a fish jumping, but a rock.
The water level is much higher than when I came here with Jérémy.
Very nice to go up the stream.
After we come out of the stream, we head to Devil's Ladder.
In this photo you can see where we were with Jérémy yesterday.
Almost center and to the left of the photo you see a tree, this is
where we were.
A few photos of Michèle.
A beautiful afternoon spent on the water.
Wednesday June 20, 2012
The soothsayers of meteorologies forecast a nice day today.
After breakfast, i went for a nice walk in the campground.
The access road is very nice with all the trees.
The campground is right next and at the end of the runway. We often see
low flying aircraft and helicopters right over our head.
It is not as noisy as you would expect.
My laptop is connected to my "basement" TV. I am working on our
next web page.
Jérémy, Danielle and Gabriel come for a visit after dinner for a
campfire and make some s'mores.
Jérémy brought his quadcopter.
Gabriel passed out in my arms.
The lovebirds making s'mores.
After eating s'mores, we have to go for a walk.
There are many eagles around the campground, even a nest in the middle
of the campground.
The temperature stays pretty warm into the evening so we stay at the
campfire until after 11 pm.
We always love it when they come for a visit.
Thursday June 21, 2012
The weather predictor say it will rain, shine and lots of clouds for
today. Their crystal ball must be broken!
The First Nation Band of Comox, the K'ómoks, are celebrating National
Aboriginal Day with dances and art sales.
We go for a little peek.
Lots of beautiful stuff.
I have never seen an ATM like this one before.
The Longhouse where the dancing takes place. We could not get in
because it was pack with people.
I would have loved to see that.
One of the Native craftsman at work slicing ceder bark into small
strips. With the strips , he will weave traditional hats like he
is wearing.
Back at the campground, I have a campfire and do some reading.
Friday June 22, 2012
Weather forecast, rain starting this afternoon until tomorrow afternoon.
I go far a bicycle ride while the weather is nice. I love the
name of this road.
After my bike ride, we went to do some shopping and purchase our
tickets for Sunday night's play.
Two deers in our campground, they are very small here on the island.
Back by 1:30 pm and the rain starts and does not stop.
Saturday June 23, 2012
Today starts with Yard Sales with Julie.
On our way out of the campground, this buck was standing by the gate
with his antlers still in velvet.
After the Yard Sales, we have an appointment for a guided tour at the
local Whisky distillery.
There are only two distilleries in Canada, this one on Vancouver
Island,
Shelter
Point, and
Glenora
in Cap Breton, Nova Scotia.
The entrance hall and waiting area. Very beautiful.
All the windows of the building are done up by a local artist.
Unique design for each windows.
The distillery room where the magic happens. Beautiful room.
Brian, our guide with the beard, explains every step required to make
Whisky, starting with grains to the finished whisky in your glass.
Brian is an exceptional guide, we are hanging on at every words he says.
After all the explanation on making whisky, time to have a taste.
Again, Brian shows us how to get the beast flavor and taste out of
whisky. We even had smoked and cooked salmon, salmon pate with
crackers and
chocolate to go with the whisky.
WOW! I really recommend this tour, even if you are not a whisky
drinker.
After the tour, we call Jérémy and invite the whole family for
dinner. Jérémy will bring chicken because he has to cook it
before he looses it. Danielle was at the grandmother's place and
they decided to come too. Great!
A busy day, first with the yard sales, then with the tour and finish it
off with loved one.
Fantastic!
Sunday June 24, 2012
Once again the weather forecast turn out to be completely different
from what they said.
Beautiful warm day, time to cut the grass.
Michèle goes to town to do laundry. On her way there she sees
many deer.
Tonight we are back at the theater for the play "Waiting for the
Parade" with Danielle. A very good play.
Jérémy is home with Gabriel.
Monday June 25, 2012
A good day to do nothing. It is sunny, so we spend most of the
day outside reading.
Jérémy and Gabriel stop for a few minutes in the afternoon, Danielle
shows up shortly after. Great to see them.
Clouds are rolling in, we walk to the edge of the airfield and have a
look at the sky coming our way.
A few drops of rain in the evening, but still a very good day.
Tuesday June 26, 2012
Oh wow! The sun is with us again and we hit +22 today, a real
heat wave!
Today, I catch up on some of the maintenance needed on the
motorhome. Like washing the outside compartment doors, washing
the window screens, washing the filter on the AC and re- tightening the
AC mounting bolts.
I also look up what is needed for the generator maintenance, like oil
oil filter, fuel filter, etc.
Sausage for dinner!
Another good week in Comox.
Wednesday June 27, 2012
The weather looks nice, meaning, fewer chances of rain.
We are off to Tofino, but first, breakfast at A&W.
Tofino is on the west coast of Vancouver Island, about a 3 hours drive
from Comox.
Our first stop is at
Cathedral Grove in the MacMillan Provincial Park.
One of the oldest resident of the grove.
In our little hike, we saw this plant. Pretty wicked defense
system.
Just could not believe the size of the leaves!
Almost inside a
Western Red cedar.
A quick stop in Port Alberni and we are back on the road.
Beautiful scenery.
The information center for Tofino/Ucluelet recommended to do the short
hike in the village of
Ucluelet only 10 km away.
The "Wild Pacific Trail" is only 2.6 km, but has many very beautiful
point of view.
A collage of 3 photos for a great view of the lighthouse.
Some of the view we had!
The wind is really torturing the trees here.
After Ucluelet, off to
Tofino.
A small village, just like Ucluelet. Mostly small boutiques with
local craft and lots of small cafe. A short 30 minutes walk and
you are
done with the village. We are not big shoppers for craft boutique
so...
Great guard dog!
When we saw all the wacky boots, we had to take a photo for our friend
Nathalie from Cold Lake.
Nathalie, your dream come true!
Not much for us in Tofino unless you are into shopping and beaches.
We are heading back home.
On our trip back, we stop at the Little Qualicum Falls Provincial
Park. They have a nice little hike around falls.
Nice falls!
Once we are back in Courtenay, we treat ourselves with a pizza from
Little Ceasar.
We really enjoyed our day even with all the driving. Great
scenery all the way there.
If you like driving winding roads, this is the place to go. You
have to keep your eyes on the road all the time.
I loved it.
June
27, 2010 is when we started our new life as nomads. So far,
we have no regrets. We love the lifestyle and we are not about to
stop. The places we saw, the people we meet, just incredible!
Thursday, Friday, June 28 and 29, 2012
On Thursday, Jérémy came for a visit with Gabriel. Forgot to take
photos!
But got one of this bucks cruising the campground.
I spent the evening at a neighbor's campfire and drank his beers!
Really nice people!
Friday evening is girl's night out for Danielle, they are going to
the movies to see "Magic Mike". Jérémy is staying home
with Gabriel. Michèle went and spent a few hours with them.
I stayed home, but noticed my neighbor had a fire so I went to keep him
company since he was alone. And I drank his beer!
Sounds like I look for people to hang around and drink their beer,
doesn't it!
Poor little Gabriel got a problem with his left eye. Looks funny!
Two very good days.
Saturday June 30, 2012
The rain finally stops by 9:30 am. We go for the yard
sales. Julie is not with us, she is in Alberta visiting
family. We miss her.
But we got to see some twins!
We did not buy much at the yard sales.
Here I am improving my "poop-a-rator" by adding a switch.
After that, we got ourselves a nice fire and stayed out until well
passed 11 pm.
During the evening, a couple walked by and Michèle recognized them
from Cold Lake. She worked with Trend at the squadron way back
when!
We talked a storm with them. Alway great to see people you've
worked with in the past.
Until next time.
Life is good...
