The evening is spent at our neighbour's yard with a campfire.
Suzie and Robbyn. Randy
and
Rolland, drank many beers and told lots of lies...
Very easy days.
July 17 and 18, 2007
Tuesday morning and we are on our way to Fort McMurray and the tar
sands.
Welcome to "Fort Make Money" (Fort McMurray).
Often, Fort McMurray is called the capital of Newfoundland. The
explanation to that is you now have more Newfoundlanders in Fort Mac
than
Newfoundland.
A piece of a plant on the way to Fort Mac. Lots of wheels.
Before we actually go and visit the open-pit mine, we visit the
museum. They have a lot of old equipment used in the mines.
Everything is big here, from the Front End Loader to the dump truck
bucket.
One of the shovels used on a dragline, look at the size of the track
compare to Suzie.
We spend the night in Fort Mac.
This photo does not even come close to show you how big this place
is. The light color line in the distance is the other side of the
pit. There is even more open pit than this one.
One out of every 8 liters of gas you use comes from Fort Mac.
Quebecers in oil country.
With big equipment comes big tires.
If I remember right, the small truck is 280 tons and the big truck is 400 tons.
The total weight of the big truck once full is 1 million pounds.
After the visit to the mine, we head back to Cold Lake.

On base tour today.
Rolland
in the simulator. It is not a flight simulator, but a technician
simulator.
The two screens are connected to the cockpit and you can "break" the
aircraft and the technician has to fix it.
This is a confirmation that the technician has learned the system.
Suzie is a fighter pilot.
Rolland
as Tom Cruise?
A co-worker used to work at the real F-18 flight simulator. He
managed to book a flight for Rolland.
Rolland flying an F-18.
The weather is still hot. We decide to have dinner in the
motorhome because it has air conditioning.
Ready!
Benoit
stopped by for a visit.
A busy day!
July 20 and 21, 2007
The Boulianne has a family reunion at Candide's daughter's place and
they
kindly invited us.
A view of the "campground".
It is fun to get back together again and chat away the afternoon.
The weather is really hot.
Many photos were showed around with the stories along with them.
We learned the story of uncle Boulianne when he came to Brosseau,
Alberta, with his family.
Rolland
really loved that wagon.
Sunday morning, they had a full breakfast for everyone, WOW!
Some more talking!
This was a lot of fun to be with the Boulianne family. A big
thank you!
Back to Cold Lake in the late afternoon.
July 22 and 23, 2007
We have come to the end of the trip.
Rolland does not want to leave...
Last group photo.
Off to Edmonton.
We took a motel for the night. Suzie and Rolland's flight back to
Montreal is
leaving early tomorrow morning.
I forgot to take photos at the airport!!!
Conclusion:
Where to start, for me and Michele, it was a great trip. We were
taking our time and enjoying every minute of it. Should we have
taken more
time? Probably, but the holidays had to end.
Some numbers:
Rolland and Suzie traveled about 3,100 km, not counting the flying.
The shortest distance covered in a day was 30.2 km,
The longest distance in a day, 436 km.
I have learned that waiting 18 months to do the web page is too long
and you forget stuff.
Thanks to Rolland and Suzie for coming with us on this trip.
